Hustle & Heart – Slow Sales to Sold Out: Embracing Sales DMs in Your Marketing

Let’s be real – marketing can feel like a full-time job, and for most of us, that’s not what we signed up for. If you’re a solopreneur or running a small business with a tiny (or nonexistent) team, you simply don’t have the hours to pour into complex marketing strategies, elaborate email sequences or social media posts that get lost in the algorithm abyss. Every piece of content, email or video you create needs to pull its weight and actually bring you sales.

Are you ready for the kicker? When I work with clients who are struggling with slow sales, the first question I ask is, “How often are you actually talking about your offer?” And, after a brief silence, I usually hear some version of, “Well…”

It’s Your Job to Invite People to Buy

If you want people to buy from you, they need to know what you sell. And one of the simplest, most effective ways to make that happen? DMs.

Yes, I’m referring to those one-on-one messages you’re probably avoiding because they feel awkward or “salesy.” It’s time to reimagine them – not as cold pitches, but as personal, meaningful connections that actually help your dream customers.

The “Ick” Factor of Traditional Sales DMs

When you hear “sales DMs,” you probably cringe at the memory of that “Hey girl, how have you been?” message from a random high school acquaintance who clearly just wants you to join their MLM. Those messages feel off because they lack authenticity, warmth and, most importantly, specificity.

The reason they don’t work? Because they’re casting a wide net instead of speaking directly to the right person. These kinds of DMs give direct messaging such a bad reputation because of how strictly transactional they are. These messages rarely get replied to or they feel incredibly uncomfortable for the customer to reply.

Getting Intentional & Genuine in DMs

Let’s flip the script on sales DMs this month! Instead of thinking about DMs as a pushy sales tactic, think of them as intentional conversations with people who actually need what you’re offering. There is power in doing the bare minimum in your marketing! This means giving yourself permission to simplify your approach, focus on real connection and get personal with your ideal buyer!

When it’s done right, a well crafted DM can take you from needing sales to being sold out! You just have to learn how to make it personal and valuable!

My Go-To (Cringe-Free) DM Formula

While I prefer a voice note, this formula works beautifully in written form, as well! Here are a few steps to remember to help you create a clear, confident and completely authentic sales DM in your business.

A: Here’s why I’m messaging you.

Start with honesty, sharing why you’re reaching out, avoiding any “fluffy” precursors.

Example: “Hey [Name], I was thinking about you because I know you’ve been working on [specific challenge] and I wanted to reach out.”

B: Here is the offer I’m selling.

Be clear about what you’re offering, giving details that they care about.

Example: “I just opened spots for [offer name] and it’s designed exactly for people who [describe who it’s for].”

C: Here’s why I think you’re perfect for this.

Show them you’re not just copy-pasting this message to 100 people. Make it feel personal.

Example: “I know you’ve been wanting [specific result], and this would be such a great fit for you because [reason].”

D: Here’s how you can take action.

Make it stupid easy for them to move forward and purchase or ask questions.

Example: “If this sounds good, I’d love to send you more details or answer any questions! You can just reply here or check out the link [share link].”

E: Here’s how I feel if you don’t move forward (Spoiler alert: totally ok).

Take the pressure off, so they don’t feel guilty if it’s not for them.

Example: “If it’s not the right time, no worries at all! Just wanted to make sure you knew about it in case it’s something you’d love.”

Selling Doesn’t Have to Feel So Hard

Remember, if all else fails with sales, try to focus on one simple strategy; talk to your people. Your next sold-out launch or product line could be a few DMs away!
