“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” As you read this quote, you may have pictured the movie scene from The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and Toto arrive in the land of Oz. Some movie lines, just like the quote above, become memorable in one way or another due to the film. Other lines can have a personal effect on a viewer. Maybe the quote comes from your favorite movie, a classic movie, reminds you of a certain event, fills you with emotion, or has a greater impact on society. Whatever the reason may be, there are lines that have gone down in motion picture history and have left lasting impacts and connections on audiences. Below is a list of some of our writers and readers’ favorite movie quotes.
Marianne Schuler –
“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” – Gone with the Wind. (“This line is a classic,” according to Schuler. )
Karen Cooper –
“You had me at hello.” – Jerry Maguire
Doug Magruder –
“Jesus, they took your Company away from you.” said the First Sergeant
“It was never my company. It belonged to Uncle Sam.” replied the Captain
This dialogue comes from Saving Private Ryan. Tom Hanks plays a captain of an American Infantry Company. His company is stationed at the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and is about to be folded into another company.
Vonda Henderson –
“Here’s looking at you, kid” and “Round up the usual suspects.” – Casablanca
Carolyn Shore –
“You make me want to be a better man.” – As Good as It Gets. (“Jim once said this quote to me. A good comment for a man to make,” stated Shore.)
Heather Spivey –
“Nobody puts Baby in the corner” – Dirty Dancing. (“It’s an empowering moment of strength,” said Spivey. “My good friend, Donna, and I used to say it all the time at work. It reminds me of fun times with her.”
Robin Bralley –
“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.” – Cool Hand Luke (Bralley added “I grew up watching it with my dad and he loved to say it.”)
KL Landing –
“Good luck storming the castle?” – The Princess Bride
“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.” – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
“Look at those snappers, will you Ralph?” – Jewel of the Nile
Derek Cernak –
“I believe we have two lives…one we learn with and one we live with after that.” – The Natural
(“I like to think it is an allegory for heaven, but as I sit in this chair today rehabbing from leg injuries from 30 years ago, it plays in this life, too,” Cernak remarked.)
As for me, I have a few favored movie quotes, including these two:
“The ones that love us never really leave us.” – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
“Miss Haynes, if you’re ever under a falling building and somebody runs up and offers to pick you up and carry you to safety, don’t think, don’t pause, don’t hesitate for a moment, just spit in his eye.” – Bob Wallace
“What did that mean?” – Betty Haynes
“It means we’re going to Vermont.” Bob Wallace from White Christmas
“Go ahead, make my day,” (Sudden Impact), “You talking to me?” (Taxi Driver), and “If you build it, he will come,” (Field of Dreams) are several other quotes that have deeply impacted fans. We all have our favorite lines from beloved movies. What is yours?
