The Sweet Spot: Wilkerson Moravian Bakery

Recipients of Triad Business Journal’s Family Business Award in 2022, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery has been serving iconic Moravian baked goods to customers since 1925. With a deep-rooted family history in Winston-Salem and the surrounding area, Wilkerson is the oldest name in Moravian baking and has perfected the craft of the Moravian Cookie, Love Feast Buns, and the beloved Moravian Sugar Cake.

The niche Moravian Cookie is surprisingly quite the challenging cookie to make, with the dough being rolled out to a paper thin consistency. In fact, the Wilkerson’s remember when Moravian Spice Cookies were often referred to as “glass cookies,” due to their tendency to shatter like glass when handled roughly. Today, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery barely blinks an eye at the task of popping these complex cookies into the oven multiple times per week, with the Wilkerson family’s century of expertise under its belt.

This month, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery will open two holiday shops, with one located at 3443 Robinhood Road, Suite P in Winston-Salem (stay tuned for details on the additional location). Customers often frequent their current Miller Street location, which the family plans to keep open throughout the rest of the year. Additionally, Triad locals can stay tuned for Wilkerson’s announcing of their new permanent location, expected to open in 2023.

Wilkerson Moravian Bakery will also have a booth at multiple holiday shows this month, including the Greensboro Holiday Market on November 4th – 6th, the Charlotte Southern Christmas Show on November 10th – 20th, and the Greensboro Craftsmen’s Christmas Classic on November 25th – 27th.

You can enjoy free Moravian Cookie samples and free Carolina Cheese Straws samples at any Wilkerson location or show. As the Wilkerson family loves to say, Taste Tells the Truth ®, so they encourage you to try as many as you’d like.

Gift-givers love sending Wilkerson Moravian Cookies, Moravian Sugar Cakes, and Carolina Cheese Straws to family and friends throughout the holiday season. Notorious for their very thin Moravian cookies, Wilkerson offers these crispy sweets in a variety of flavors such as the traditional Moravian spice, sugar, lemon, sugared ginger, delicious chocolate, orange brandy, and customer favorite Blackbeard’s Cookie, a butter rum blend inspired by Blackbeard the Pirate, who lived on the coast of North Carolina.

The perfect sidekick to a warm winter cup of coffee, Wilkerson’s Moravian Sugar Cake is baked fresh daily and is best served warm out of the oven. In fact, the sugar cake is Wilkerson’s claim to fame, being the first product that put the Wilkerson family on the map of most-loved Moravian baked goods. Made with a yeast dough of pure butter, honey, potatoes, and combined with melted brown sugar and cinnamon, Moravian Sugar Cakes are shipped fresh from Wilkerson’s Bakery on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

Adding a savory snack to the mix, Wilkerson offers Carolina Cheese Straws for those with a saltier palette. Baked with top-notch extra sharp cheddar, butter, and a hint of cayenne pepper for a kick of flavor, the cheese straws are ideal for holiday party snacks and corporate gifting.

Wilkerson makes gifting even easier by providing nationwide shipping and easy online ordering. Keep your eyes peeled for brand new, vibrant gift boxes this year for Moravian Cookies and gift pack options such as the Holiday Favorites Gift Pack which includes Spice Cookies, Sugar Cookies and two Moravian Sugar Cakes.
