“The Show Must Go On” Said the Actress

If you have been to even just one performance at Theatre Alliance (TA) in Winston-Salem, then you have likely been delighted by Rebecca Barnhardt! Rebecca has shared her talents as a gifted actress, singer, and tap-dancer in nearly 30 shows! She abounds with the kind of energy that makes you want to jump up on stage with her to join in the fun! When she isn’t on stage, she’s volunteering behind the scenes or buying a ticket so she can sit in the audience and cheer on her beloved TA family.

It was a treat to catch Rebecca between rehearsals to get her insight on Theatre Alliance’s brave and creative response to the pandemic.

As a seasoned live theater actress, what was your reaction to learning about possible outdoor performances at Theatre Alliance?

I was very pleased to learn that Theatre Alliance would be having outdoor performances. With the shutdowns that have occurred due to Covid19, I knew that the arts were going to be hit hard. I am grateful that Jamie Lawson has found a way to continue bringing entertainment to the community.

What outdoor show or shows were you in this summer? What roles?

I was in Disenchanted: The Musical, which performed at the beginning of June in the parking lot of the future home of Theatre Alliance. My roles included: The Little Mermaid, Belle, and Rapunzel.

What did you find most challenging about performing outdoors? And what was most gratifying?

Most challenging: The outdoor elements made it a bit tough. It was HOT! For those of us who are used to performing inside with air conditioning, it was quite hot. We also experienced passers-by, cars, and pedestrians, stopping to see what was going on. During the final performance, we had leaf blowers, lawnmowers, and weed eaters as extra background noise.

Most gratifying: Just having the chance to perform and escape from thinking about the craziness going on in the world for a few hours.

What do you look forward to the most on the other side of the pandemic?

I am just looking forward to being able to continue shows, hopefully inside, and be able to be around the people I haven’t had much of an opportunity to see. OH, and HUGS! I miss hugging people!

Don’t miss Rebecca in Winter Wonder Wander at Theatre Alliance’s new location, 650 West 6th Street, on December 11-13 and 16-22. For more information, visit theatrealliance.ws.
