Sixth Sense Health & Wellness Center: Life-Changing Care for Veterans

BY MARTIE EMORY

Knowing that wellness comes in all shapes and sizes, CEO Nikki Roach and the super experienced team at Sixth Sense Health & Wellness Center in Winston-Salem take every interaction with their clients personally.

From massage therapy and acupuncture techniques to balanced nutrition and healthy weight control, these supremely talented professionals are always true to a client’s specific needs, knowing their journey can be life-changing! After providing their services via telemedicine during the stay-at-home order brought on by COVID-19, Sixth Sense happily welcomed patients back in person when they reopened in May.

Among those clients are many grateful United States Veterans who have felt firsthand the benefits of acupuncture and massage on both a physical and emotional level – a results-based program the compassionate Sixth Sense team has been committed to for several years.

“We have been working with Veterans for about three years,” explains Nikki. “They will typically be seen by their primary care physician first, and if they are interested in exploring a more holistic approach to healing a specific injury, they can request approval through the VA hospital located in Salisbury, NC.”

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits package does cover personalized plans for both massage therapy and acupuncture therapy for qualified Veterans, with an excellent success record.

“Acupuncture is often used to treat a specific ailment – such as lower back pain – but the Veteran sees benefits in other ways as well,” says Nikki, noting that anxiety, post-traumatic stress, common sleep issues, and basic mind-calming can also be positively affected by both acupuncture and massage therapy. “Their first treatment usually lasts from 45 minutes to one hour, and most Veterans are approved for eight to 12 sessions in the beginning. They can request additional sessions if needed.”

Senior acupuncturist Dr. Chelsea Wynter LAc. ND, and licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, Dr. Sylvia Bognar LAc. ND, often see ten patients a day, and both professionals see their craft as one that balances the natural flow of health as part of a complete wellness plan personalized for each client. Chelsea specializes in holistic medicine and acupuncture, specifically acupuncture for stress relief, sleep support, fertility, and pain relief, and she’s always pleased to modify treatments based on the client’s changing needs. Away from the office, she loves Zumba, dancing, being outdoors, and playtime with her daughter!

Sylvia’s clinical expertise includes pain management, stress, mood disorders, strengthening the immune system, and personalized herbal therapy and nutritional counseling. She is dedicated to assisting her patients in regaining and maintaining total health, with an emphasis on prevention and wellness. Sylvia holds a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine, and very much appreciates the opportunity to be part of the Sixth Sense staff!
