With a caring and compassionate intention that has served generations of women in the Winston-Salem area, Hawthorne Obstetrics & Gynecology continues to thrive in the field of women’s wellness. Devoted to treating every patient like family, Hawthorne OB-GYN providers can deliver newborns at either Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist or Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center – convenient to everywhere in the Triad.
As the Hawthorne legacy of excellence continues to shine through the years, the practice grows with talented new providers, including Dr. Katelyn Simmons, who joined the group in September of 2022. Born and raised in Houma, Louisiana, Katie’s father was a nurse anesthetist, introducing her to the medical field at an early age. She earned an undergraduate degree in 2014 in biological sciences from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and then attended LSU Medical School in Shreveport, LA, where she earned her medical degree in 2018, receiving an award for excellence in OB-GYN.
Katie went on to complete her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, LA, earning distinction in laparoscopic surgery in 2021. She met her now husband, Kyle, during their undergraduate studies, and they more recently found themselves making Winston-Salem their home after a series of fateful connections. Kyle is an attorney, and the two have a little girl, Amelia, who is nine-and-a-half months old, along with another outdoor companion, beloved dog Ozzy!
“The last hurricane in Louisiana made me think about where we wanted to raise a family,” Katie shares. “Winston-Salem is a great place for families, and we especially love all the outdoor activities. As cliché as it sounds, being close to the beach and mountains was a factor!”
Katie definitely views her job very differently as she’s now a new mother herself and is thoughtful about addressing the challenges of the life/work balance that many women face.
“I think what’s interesting about the OB-GYN field is realizing and focusing on the adaptability of women, from teenagers to menopause,” says Katie, who currently cares for patients of all ages. “Think about what all we go through as women.”
As part of the Hawthorne team, Katie enjoys educating patients and stressing preventive care, while collaborating with women to make important decisions about their personal care – a mantra that began back in 1983 when Dr. Richard E. Hedrick, Jr. opened the office as a solo practice. Dr. Hedrick wanted to provide women the absolute best care in the Triad, so he expanded his team to offer the same high-quality service to more teens and adults. Since then, Hawthorne OB-GYN has added board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners and sonographers to the team.
“Our focus has always been on providing top-quality care in obstetrics and gynecology, and we’ve invested in state-of-the-art technology and new services such as in-office ultrasounds for high-risk patients to deliver on that promise,” says Lisa Yokeley, practice administrator. “Services we provide include preventive care, well-woman exams, complete family planning, preconception, infertility services, ultrasounds, mammography and expert diagnosis and treatment of complex issues like pelvic organ prolapse, as well as maintaining optimal wellness during and after menopause.”
