Hospice & Palliative CareCenter is pleased to announce Lisa and Bob Gfeller as the Best Life Award recipients for the third annual Living Your Best Life Speaker Series, sponsored by Dewey’s, scheduled for October 2, 2018, in Winston-Salem. This year’s featured speaker is Isaac Lidsky, author of the New York Times bestseller Eyes Wide Openand a main stage TED Talk that was viewed more than a million times in its first three weeks. Lidsky was born with a rare degenerative disease that caused him to slowly lose his sight, and he will share his eye-opening perspective on facing great challenges with grace and humility.
Facing challenges with grace and humility is nothing new for Lisa and Bob Gfeller. In 2008 they lost their son, Matthew, following a traumatic brain injury he sustained during a high school football game. Lisa and Bob turned their heartache into action by spinning the question “Why me?” into “What now?” and establishing the Matthew Gfeller Foundation to support sport-related traumatic brain injury research, prevention, care, and advocacy. These tireless advocates are keeping Matthew’s legacy alive by helping others avoid having to go through what they experienced. The impact on the future of young athletes is an amazing way to honor Matthew’s memory.
The Best Life Award is a celebration and acknowledgment of community members who have elevated the possibilities and potentials of lives in the Triad. Those who have been recognized in the past include Clyde Fitzgerald of Second Harvest Food Bank, and Emily and Keith Davis of Fleet Feet Sports and Mission: Feet First. The Best Life Award was created to demonstrate how each of us can make a positive difference in the world.
“We named this event Living Your Best Life to help spotlight our mission. Palliative and Hospice care, after all, are not about helping people die, but rather helping people live fully and comfortably, making the most of every day,” shared Linda Darden, President and CEO of Hospice & Palliative CareCenter. “I’m thrilled with the level of expertise we are bringing to the region. With universally powerful topics, the impact has enormous potential to change lives,” she continued.
