Shop owner Chris Hambrick is a resident of Clemmons herself and loves the small-town feel of the area, which allows her and her team to foster friendly relationships with regular customers. In February 2013, Penny Lane first opened as a shop for upcycled furniture before becoming a clothing and accessory boutique. Chris didn’t expect Penny Lane to transform into a boutique until she began receiving positive feedback from customers when the furniture store began carrying accessories such as cardigans and wraps around the holidays. Once the world of clothing and apparel piqued her interest, it soon became clear to Chris that carrying a full inventory of furniture along with clothing would be overwhelming. Soon enough, she bit the bullet and made the decision to transition from selling furniture to fashion. From an exciting new business venture to a stylish local favorite, Penny Lane Boutique shed its former furniture skin and rapidly became a Clemmons staple.
Penny Lane Boutique offers shoppers a wide variety of clothing items and accessories for all ages, personalities, and budgets. While the boutique is especially popular among 25 to 30 year-olds, young and older adults have no issue finding pieces to buy that catch their eye. According to Chris, even her 75-year-old mother rarely leaves the store empty-handed, and neither does Chris’s 19-year-old daughter. With such versatile pieces to choose from, Penny Lane is the ideal shop for a Saturday morning girls’ day out.

According to Chris, stocking the boutique’s shelves with classic staples is imperative, but she likes to add her own personal, funky flair to much of the boutique’s inventory. Although the shop doesn’t currently sell plus-size clothing, many brands sold online and in-store such as Z Supply carry sizes ranging from extra-small to extra-large to fit all body types.
Over the last year, Chris and her team at Penny Lane adapted to challenges presented by the pandemic and upgraded their customers’ online shopping experience.
