7 Ways to Beat the Post-Holiday, Winter Blues – Small Shifts to Boost Your Mood and Energy Until Spring Arrives

The holiday season is always so busy and filled with festive lights that it’s easy to overlook the fact that it gets dark so early and daylight is fleeting. However, as soon as the new year hits and the trees are packed up, winter really sets in for many people. Does this time of year leave you feeling a little sad or less energetic? You aren’t alone!

In fact, there is a condition called “winter depression” – more officially known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The reduced sunlight during winter can actually disrupt your body’s circadian rhythm. This is your internal clock that plays a key role in mood-regulating hormones like serotonin and melatonin. When these levels get out of balance, it often leads to disruptive sleep, sadness, less energy and more.

Luckily, there are some ways to turn the winter blues around! Below are a few ideas to add some cheer to your winter.

Enjoy Sunlight

It’s important to take full advantage of the sunlight hours. Even if it’s cold, bundle up and take a walk or take the kids to a park. Another great way to capture the sunlight is to enjoy your coffee outside on the patio in the morning.

Get Social

Another way to combat the winter blues is to stay social. Two fun social options that are great indoor options are enjoying a girls’ night out at a local restaurant or joining a book club. If you are crunched for time, even a quick call or text chain with a bestie provides the perfect social fix.

Stay Active

Exercise is imperative for mood-regulating hormones as it releases endorphins. If you aren’t a fan of the cold, exercise indoors. You can join a gym which is great for having more structure, workout options and socializing. However, if that’s not in your budget, there are plenty of workout routines you can do at home.

Make it Fun

One reason the winter blues don’t often hit until after Christmas is because that time of year is fun and bright, so capture and carry that festive feeling throughout the season. Go shopping for fun winter clothes that you feel great going out in. Try out different types of winter flavors in your drinks and meals.

Create a Winter Bucket List

Another way to embrace the season is by creating your very own Winter Bucket List. It will allow you to have fun and remember winter isn’t so bad! Need ideas for your list? Luckily, last winter, I wrote an article on this topic. Simply visit forsythfamilymagazine.com and search “Winter Bucket List.”

Focus on Self Care

While self care is important all year long, it is vital during the winter. Self care allows you to recharge your batteries and feel balanced. It can be anything as grand as having a spa getaway weekend or as small as taking a relaxing bath.

Give Yourself Grace

It’s hard for us women, but do not be so hard on yourself. If you didn’t finish your to-do list, instead of beating yourself up, change your list to be a little more manageable. Break down larger tasks into smaller ones. If you’ve been hating that holiday weight you put on, focus on the physical attributes you love.
