How would you describe your work?

Definitely eclectic and ever evolving, I rarely do the same thing twice, and I love collecting new skills and materials to work with. I especially love working with recycled textiles, clothing, furniture, bags, etc. rather than buying things new. It’s better for the planet and better for encouraging creativity and innovation in my work.

What genres and styles influence your work most?

In my wearable art, I’m heavily inspired by classic artists like Arthur Rackham, as well as older medieval or viking art and carvings. All of my art, regardless of media, is also inspired by nature.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

I’m constantly evolving and picking up new skills. Just this year, I’ve gotten into woodworking and furniture refurbishing, while last year, I learned how to incorporate 3D printing and digital sculpting. I can’t stand to be stagnant and love the thrill of a challenge. I genuinely hate to be bored, so I’m always challenging myself with new skills and projects which is also how I cope with the ever evolving insanity that is the world right now – especially American politics.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

Sometimes it means I lose some sleep here and there when I’m deep into it. But honestly, art is my passion, it’s how I relax; it’s my outlet for strong emotions, and it’s what I look forward to all day when I’m away from my studio space. Some people play video games or watch TV after work to decompress. I’m in my studio in the backyard with a saw or my sewing room pushing my cat’s paws away from the needle.

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?

It’s so hard to pick just one! I’d have to say my custom designed costume, inspired by Fearn the Faun from the popular Dungeons & Dragons show Critical Role. I hand-dyed all the green linen and custom built the corset from a real victorian corset pattern and even hand sculpted and cast the 12” hoof heels. My favorite fun fact is the shade of green on the chemise dress is an exact match to my cat’s eyes. He is such a handsome fellow and my best crafting buddy.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

Lately, my passion has been learning woodworking! My partner and I moved in together this year, and I’ve been having a ball fully customizing my studio space without fear of losing a security deposit like I did when I was renting. (Also, having a backyard studio space to get messy that’s separate from my sewing room is a huge plus!) Getting ready to redo all our kitchen cabinets soon, too. And, of course, I’m still enjoying sewing and doing costume and wig commissions!

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their practice?

Don’t give up if it’s not perfect on the first try. Making art is just as much about enjoying the journey as the finished product. All skills take time to learn; don’t compare yourself too much to the art of others, as long as you are enjoying the process, that’s the most important part.
