A longstanding Winston-Salem icon, Midtown Cafe & Dessertery is always my go-to resource for supplying family gatherings with delicious cakes. As someone who is often too lazy to bake, Midtown makes online ordering and pick-up convenient, allowing customers to reserve a variety of cake slices, full cakes and pies, and other menu items ahead of schedule.
Coconut is a summertime staple, with Midtown’s perfectly sweet Coconut Cake being a customer favorite year-round. Their light and fluffy Strawberry Shortcake is topped with whipped cream, while the tangy Lemon Bar satisfies those craving a hint of tartness in their desserts.
A New Look and a New Bar
If you haven’t been inside the restaurant recently, you are missing out on the dining room’s brand new remodel, including the updated dessert area designed with a full-glass look in mind, similar to an aesthetic found in many European bakeries. This summer, stop by Midtown Cafe’s new and complete coffee bar debuting seasonal coffee drinks and mocktails. One refreshing coffee drink to cool down with is the Shaken Oat Milk Caramel Coconut Cold Brew, bringing a sweet kick of energy over ice for a morning or afternoon pick-me-up. Not in the mood for coffee? The cafe’s Frozen Mango Mocktail serves as an alcohol-free, tropical treat.
Breakfast & Brunch = Mouthwatering Mornings
Aside from top-notch coffee and cakes, Midtown is well-known for the breakfast, lunch, and dinner options listed on its extensive dining menu. Start your day with Fruity French Toast or the newly added and deliciously fluffy Oatmeal Pancakes topped with chopped pecans, strawberries, and a blueberry drizzle.
Brunch-goers love Midtown’s Bubbly Flights, which offer four unique spins on typical champagne cocktails. Out of seven new spring flight flavors, the Forsyth Magazines ladies were able to try the Peach Mojito, Strawberry Pina Colada, Hummingbird, and Huckleberry Lemonade concoctions. Inspired by Midtown’s Hummingbird cake, the Hummingbird flavor on the Bubbly Flight was my personal favorite, with a crisp pineapple flavor and a hint of cinnamon.
Pre-Dessert Deliciousness
Midtown’s Shrimp Tacos are packed with jumbo shrimp, corn salsa, and avocado crema served in flour tortillas, alongside the cafe’s delectable Pesto Pasta Salad. Seafood lovers will also rave about the Crab Cake Sandwich with a spicy remoulade, in addition to the Salmon Berry Feta Salad with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing for a healthier dinner option.
The Cali Burger is a beef-lover’s dream. Served with Swiss cheese, tomato, bacon, and avocado, the Cali burger is topped off with a signature Cali sauce on a warm, buttery bun to tie the ingredients together. Finish the burger off with a side of Midtown’s crispy fries, which the Forsyth Magazines ladies happily snacked on throughout the night.
A summertime backyard cookout meets a popular Southwest favorite with the Barbecue Chicken Quesadilla. Stuffed with barbecue chicken, perfectly melted cheese, bacon, and optional-to-add caramelized onions, this quesadilla is served alongside homemade potato chips and is easy to eat or share with family and friends.
