Did you know May is Mental Health Awareness month? I’ve struggled with anxiety since I was a child. I remember being six or seven years old and telling my mom that I was so worried, but I didn’t know what exactly I was worried about. The feeling of being anxious is one I’ve been accustomed to for most of my life. I’m certainly not alone — I know anxiety disorders are among the most common of mental health issues. It makes me feel good to see things like taking anxiety medication and/or going to therapy become situations that people are no longer afraid to talk about. I think we still have a way to go, but we’ve certainly come a long way in opening up conversations about mental health. It takes a lot of courage to act towards working on your mental health. If you have thought about making that appointment or having that conversation with a loved one — this is your sign to do it.
I’m thrilled that we’re featuring Fiddle & Fig on our cover this month! Morgan (one of the owners) and I went to high school together, and I’ve loved watching this dream of hers come to life. She and Jamie are two special, hard working women! You can read all about their store (and some exciting expansion news!) HERE.
Girls’ Night Out is BACK! Join us at Jeffrey Adams on Fourth on May 2nd for gift card giveaways, half-price wine and some much-needed quality time with your best girlfriends.
May 14th is Mother’s Day, and I must wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to my sweet momma, Keela! I just love this photo that Jon Eric Johnson snapped of her a couple of summers ago. She’ll be the first to tell you that she does not enjoy having her photo made, and I love this one because it truly shows her personality (she didn’t know her photo was being taken). She is passionate. She is driven. She is truly one-of-a-kind. I couldn’t be prouder of her as I’ve watched her take on the challenge of starting a brand new magazine in the Lake Norman area.
One thing we do not have in common is that she’s never met a stranger and is always quick to ask anyone and everyone if they’d like a copy of the magazine(s) / if they know about the magazine(s). Whether she’s at home in Lake Norman or if she’s visiting Winston-Salem — it doesn’t matter. She’ll make sure if you haven’t heard of our magazines, that you’re familiar with them once you get done talking to her. She is the epitome of loving what she does — her passion and excitement are contagious. Happy Mother’s Day, KeeKee! I love you!
As always, thank you for choosing to pick up Forsyth Woman this month! We would be nothing without our amazing readers! I hope you learn something new while reading this issue!
Wishing you a happy and healthy month of May,
B
