Starboard Accounting & Consulting was founded ten years ago by Kerri Stewart, who has worked in the bookkeeping field for over 15 years. Kerri is also a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. Over the years, she and her team of bookkeeping specialists have built Starboard Accounting & Consulting’s business targeting bookkeeping, payroll, and payroll taxes. While tax preparation services are not provided by Starboard Accounting & Consulting, they do work with CPAs on a regular basis. The flow of bookkeeping records to the tax preparer teams selected by their clients is considered seamless with data well organized and documented.
Most of Starboard Accounting & Consulting clients would be considered small businesses with an average of one to five employees. Starboard’s clients, generally located in the Triad area, range from restaurants, contractors/builders, property investors, retail shops, interior designers, attorneys, creative/graphic designers, automotive shops, landscapers, and non-profit organizations. With Starboard on board, the need for in-house bookkeeping is removed from the equation, allowing their clients to focus on their particular business or service. In addition to bookkeeping services, Starboard Accounting & Consulting also provides payroll services for about 60 of their clients.
The clients at Starboard Accounting & Consulting have their own bookkeeping specialist working with them. On a regular basis, the team conducts peer reviews so that there is another specialist familiar with each client; however, on a day-to-day basis, each Starboard bookkeeping specialist works with their designated clients. Some clients may elect to handle their daily financials and simple have their Starboard specialist balance the accounts. Some prefer to have their specialist take care of all the day-to-day paperwork/bookkeeping; the level of involvement is at the discretion of the client.
“Many of our bookkeeping specialists work part-time,” explained Kerri. “We consider our business family friendly with strong work-life balance options. Each bookkeeping specialist sets their own schedule based on their clients’ needs. Some are in and out of the office, visiting clients; some work mostly from home. Our business lends itself to that flexibility, and it works well for us, as well as our clients.”
Sheri Cason is the office, HR, & technology manager and is usually in the office. Sheri is the first person clients speak with and is the go-to person for computer issues or account questions. Amy Keegan is the Accounting Manager and works one-on-one with clients and bookkeepers. Amy is also a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. Two new bookkeeping specialists have recently joined the team, including one who focuses on the unique requirements for non-profits.
In addition to standard bookkeeping services, Starboard Accounting & Consulting also provides training sessions customized for their clients’ business. Clients may schedule customized QuickBooks presentations by contacting Sheri to relay their training needs.
