Nutcracker – A Review! by Kristi Marion

Posted in Reviews by kmelang | Tags: , , , , ,

For 47 years, the UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA) has graced Winston-Salem audiences with their performance of The Nutcracker at the Stevens Center, which the school now owns. This production of the world’s most popular ballet is certainly jewel we wear proudly in our crown as the city of Arts and Innovation. The UNCSA’s The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition for many families and lovers of the arts in the area, bringing thousands to the streets of downtown Winston-Salem. The UNCSA’s production of the ballet is like a glorious advent calendar gift we get to open in anticipation of Christmas, chock full of ballet talent, exquisite costumes, stunning set designs and the live orchestra, directed by Charles Barker, as it plays Tchaikovsky’s score, is the sparkly frosting on the Christmas cake. The 2012 performance just celebrated opening night Saturday, December 8, 2012.

As soon as the guests leave and Clara reluctantly bids Fritz goodbye, she dozes off with her nutcracker in her arms and the magnificent Christmas tree, illuminated by hundreds of fiber optic lines, quadruples in size to give the illusion that Clara has shrunk to the size of a doll. A troop of adorable baby mice and playful mice skitter and dance and made the audience laugh before harassing Clara. The now life-size nutcracker steps in to save her. After battling with the mouse king, with Clara’s help, the nutcracker kills the mouse king, and transforms into a prince (who resembles Fritz).A wintry scene opens as the family returns home to welcome guests to their Christmas party. The children did such an amazing job as the rowdy little boys play soldiers and tout their trumpets. Then the mysterious councilman, magician and toymaker, Drosselmeyer, who is also god father to Clara and Fritz, enters to entertain the children with tricks and toys and a gift of a special nutcracker to Clara. The following party scenes foreshadow Clara’s magical dream to come.

The Nutcracker Prince takes Clara through an enchanted forest where the snow flakes dance. The production does a wonderful job with the special effect of falling snow. As the music gets faster and more dancers enter the scene, even more snow falls, and faster, resembling a blizzard before the dancers peel off and the snow lightens. After intermission, the curtain rose and the audience gasped as a thick fog rolled off the stage and into the orchestra pit. The prince leads Clara to the Land of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy is presiding until the Prince’s return. The prince acts out the story for the royal court, recounting the battle with the Mouse King. To reward Clara’s heroism, treats from around the world dance for her: chocolate from Spain, tea from China, coffee from Arabia, vodka from Russia, Danish shepherdesses, and the always bizarre, yet comedic, giant Mother Ginger, who is rolled out before releasing her clown “Ginger Snaps” children from under her skirts, followed by a dancing bouquet of flowers, and ending with the Sugar Plum Fairy’s waltz with her  cavalier. Clara wakes to find that it was all a beautiful dream.
Based on the professional caliber of the production, unwitting viewers would be astonished to discover that it is an all-school production featuring students not only as the cast, but also in the orchestra and crew. However, world-renowned guests artists Veronika Part (Principal, American Ballet Theatre) and Charles Askegard (Principal, New York City Ballet) will join the UNCSA cast for the performances on December 13 at 7:30 p.m. and December 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Not only is the dancing and the music phenomenal, it is impossible to say enough about the costumes in this production. To get lost in the confections of the costume shop of this production would be a be a particularly sweet bit of heaven.
The full performance schedule for the UNCSA production of The Nutcracker is: Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, Dec. 13 and Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Ticket prices are: Prime Orchestra, $68; Orchestra Center, $50 for adults and $35 for children 13 and under; Orchestra Sides and Front Balcony, $45 for adults and $30 for children 13 and under; Center Balcony, $33 for adults and $24 for children 13 and under; Rear Balcony, $25 for adults and $20 for children 13 and under. Prime Orchestra seating for the two guest artist performances on Dec. 13 and 14 is $75.  For the best deal in town take advantage of the great prices on The Nutcracker “Family Four Pack” for the evening performances on Thursday, Dec. 13 and Sunday, Dec. 16: $130 for Orchestra Side/Front Balcony and $95 for Center Balcony.  The “Family Four Pack” offer is subject to availability.

Consignment Shop Hop – SO MUCH FUN!

Posted in Fashion, Forsyth Woman by kmelang | Tags: , , , , , ,

Want to spend a special day with your girlfriends?  Want to go and enjoy shopping without the hassle of driving?  Lunch included?  Think about Forsyth Woman’s Consignment Shop Hop!

I went on the Shop Hop last year and had a blast!  I didn’t know everyone on the bus but we became great friends by the end of the day.  The bus stops at local shops, everyone goes in and shops for a short amount of time, then we board the bus for the next stop.  Forsyth Woman has great prizes all day long, pulling out tickets and giving away spa time and other goodies after each stop.  Some of the shops had a great prize to give away after shopping in the store.  We hang out on the bus looking at each others deals, with plenty of room to hold the bags.

Some shops are clothing, some are clothing and housewares, and many have decor.  It’s a great way to start the Christmas shopping early and get it out of the way.

What did I love the most?  I spent the day with some friends, someone else did all the driving, lunch was provided and I won a prize!  What a great way to spend a Saturday with my friends at Forsyth Woman!

Think about the Consignment Shop Hop – only $25 for your seat to a day of shopping and fun!

Help us give dogs a New Leash On Life!

Posted in Pets by kmelang | Tags: , , , , , , ,

The New Leash on Life program is a pairing of homeless dogs with the most unlikely of trainers, Forsyth Correctional Institute Inmates.  How does this work?  An inmate is paired with a dog in need of socialization and rehabilitation, both then go through a 10 week program where the dogs are crate trained, taught the basic obedience with Professional Dog Trainers then when the dog graduates it goes to a great home with adoption.

Not just the Inmates go through a rigorous training program and qualification process, but the dogs that are chosen as well as the families that adopt.  Many dogs come into the system unable to be adopted, this program gets them to a point where they can find a forever home.  Some of the inmates say that the program has changed their lives, in the 10 week program they have learned responsibility, and discipline, something they will take with them outside of the Correctional system.
Want to help?  There are several different ways:

1.  Adopt a Dog!  New Leash On Life has a doggy class graduating the 7th of August, if you’ve thought about adopting take a look at the graduates you may fall in love with one.

2.  It costs money to run this program, any donation from a token “we believe in you” to a gift that puts a dog through the program, as a non profit your money goes not not just helping dogs in a need of a home but the inmates as well.

3.  Wear the New Leash on Life T-shirt – stop by and pick up yours.  Wear it proudly around town and answer questions about the program spreading the word.

4.  They are always in need of supplies, dog food, dog treats, training videos, books you name it.

5.  A little time goes a long way, help volunteer with the program or with the Humane Society to put up flyers, answer phones or just help out.

These dogs and their trainers are taught to love and trust, some come from backgrounds that have broken that part of them, help Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family give these deserving dogs a NEW LEASH ON LIFE.

Move It AND Lose It – Today

Posted in Forsyth Woman, Move It And Lose It by kmelang | Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Today I choose….

Today I choose happiness over fear.

Peace over Anger

Joy over sadness.

Today I blame no one,

Love everyone,

especially myself.

Today I will make mistakes

Learn and Grow

Educate others.

Today I stop complaining

Accepting what I cannot change

Throwing away the rest.

Today the mask comes off

I am open and honest

I am who I am

Today I make a choice

for a better tomorrow.

Move It And Lose It – Spring Anew!

Posted in Forsyth Woman, Health, Move It And Lose It by kmelang | Tags: , , , , , , ,

Today is the first day of Spring, and new beginning!  The “vernal equinox,” vernal meaning Spring, and equinox meaning “equal length.”  This is the celestial tipping point where day and night are of equal length (let the inner geek out.)  Sure it’s, MARCH but the trees are blooming, you can hear the frogs in the creeks, there’s birds everywhere.  It’s an exciting time to renew your vow to yourself.  Make it a point to celebrate who you are and then make your list of where you want to be, not just the BIG things but the little things.  A sampling of my list:

Get a raw egg to stand upright!  Yes, you can do this on the Spring Equinox, I won’t tell you how long I was in my kitchen (it’s still dark at 430am) but I got it!

Take my dog for a walk everyday – she’s so much happier AND she really needs it.  A daily walk is the dog’s therapy – she gets to read the poo poo bulletin board and I get to stand and watch her while doing NOTHING.

Write my morning pages every morning, one page long hand that is then thrown away.  This is my daily brain dump (could be great writing, could be drivel) it helps prepare me for the day.

Work on adding some type of fruit and veggie to every meal.

Packing my boys lunches for school – have you seen cafeteria food lately?

Call one person a day to just chat – especially my friends that don’t live close.

It doesn’t take much to make yourself happy, not a single thing on that list costs any money – but as the Earth starts a new, I choose to start anew too.  What would you add to your list?

A few simple ways to say I Love You!

Posted in Forsyth Woman, Health by kmelang | Tags: , , , , ,

We’ve moved past the Superbowl and Valentine’s Day looms ahead.  Why celebrate love on only one day a year?  Why not say I Love You every day!  Here’s a few more simple ways to get their attention:

1.  Write them a note – yes, actually write and note and hide it somewhere where they will find it during their day.  In a lunch box, in a DayTimer, with their keys to the car.  They will be surprised you chose this archaic form of communication but it will make them smile.

2.  Give them some space.  You don’t have to spend every minute of every day together, there’s nothing better than a spouse taking the kids out to eat and giving Mom or Dad a quiet hour at home.

3.  Be nice – when was the last time you complimented your spouse?  Make it a point to point out something wonderful every day!

4.  Don’t be selfish – sometimes taking one for the family is the biggest gift you can give them – your time, your sunny attitude always shows you care.

5.  Don’t wait – do it today and every day, then Valentine’s Day becomes just a day in the story of your love!

What are some simple, yet effective ways to say, “I love you?”

A little ditty from Forsyth Magazines to you!

A happy and wonderful 2012 to you,

May you find success in everything you do.

Time is not about what’s sitting in the past,

It’s about those memories that you wish would last.

So take stock and tuck away things that make you sad,

Bring together friends and talk about what makes you glad.

Come up with a list, something that makes you smile,

Remembering that greatness sometimes takes a while.

Then write it down and tuck it away secure,

Knowing that life can never be safe and sure.

Go out and celebrate a brand new present,

Knowing that 2012 will be more than pleasant.

So happy new year from us to you,

Here’s to a great New Year in everything you do!
