Want to spend a special day with your girlfriends? Want to go and enjoy shopping without the hassle of driving? Lunch included? Think about Forsyth Woman’s Consignment Shop Hop!
I went on the Shop Hop last year and had a blast! I didn’t know everyone on the bus but we became great friends by the end of the day. The bus stops at local shops, everyone goes in and shops for a short amount of time, then we board the bus for the next stop. Forsyth Woman has great prizes all day long, pulling out tickets and giving away spa time and other goodies after each stop. Some of the shops had a great prize to give away after shopping in the store. We hang out on the bus looking at each others deals, with plenty of room to hold the bags.
Some shops are clothing, some are clothing and housewares, and many have decor. It’s a great way to start the Christmas shopping early and get it out of the way.
What did I love the most? I spent the day with some friends, someone else did all the driving, lunch was provided and I won a prize! What a great way to spend a Saturday with my friends at Forsyth Woman!
Think about the Consignment Shop Hop – only $25 for your seat to a day of shopping and fun!
Sure it snowed this morning, but just like any North Carolina day, the sun was out 30 minutes later and it was gone. So in the spirit of Spring, and all of our flowers are blooming anyway, here’s 5 things trendy for Spring/Summer 2012!
- High waisted flare pants – no we’re not talking about Mom Jeans, but think Katherine Hephurn with the high waisted flares. Pair this in a light linen type fabric with a neutral color and you’ll never wear another pair of pants all summer! The pants this year will have thin loops for a belt so you can even dress it up with a blingy belt. Example: http://www.6pm.com/splendid-linen-flare-leg-pant-clay
- Preppy is back – espadrill shoes, plaids, stripes are back in style. These trends are not only clean looking but comfortable, nothing like blue linen pants with a blue and white striped tunic and some bright red espadril shoes!
- Do you crochet? Great! It’s back again. Small crocheted tops over flowing neutral colored tunics take comfort and style to a new level. Better bet, go look through vintage or consignment shops and find your own one of a kind treasures!
- 4. 70′s glam is back for the night life – think of a sequined dress but luckily a smaller shoulder pad to keep the line, and dare I say it – the jumpsuit is back!
- 5. You cannot go wrong with a base of neutral colors in flowing clothes. Pair these items with your few new pieces with added color and create a look that’s unique to you. What’s the favorite color for Spring? ORANGE, yes, that’s right Orange!
6. Don’t forget those Kitty Heels, the nice short think COMFORTABLE heel that makes anything you wear look good!
Plan your wardrobe by taking inventory of what you currently have and what you plan on taking to consignment shops. Then make a list of what you’d like to add and as you drop off for consignment, shop the racks for a few go to pieces. Or shop at your favorite boutique for the comfortable tunics and flare pants and go out in style. What trends do you see for Spring?
Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days! Finally, something for men and NO they will not turn it pink but hmmmmmm, the idea?
So in honor of Movember, one of Forsyth Women’s writers is attempting the ‘stache. You can support his cause by following this email,
“I’ll try to keep this short. Basically, I am going to not shave the area above my upper lip next month, and it’s going to look really bad. I promise to shave it off on Thanksgiving, because if I don’t my beautiful girlfriend Jenni will not allow me to visit her in Arizona or eat turkey, or mashed potatoes or cornbread or gravy.
Here is the run down:
Unfortunately, I am not very talented in the art of facial hair (like my coworker Mr. Jerry) and I don’t particularly grow a nice mustache. My idea is that you will donate money and if I raise enough, maybe you won’t have to look at the abomination that I am attempting to grow under my nose, anymore. So, I apologize ahead of time should you have to witness my future facial features.”

What traditions are special to you during this time of the year? Christians throughout the world are celebrating and remembering Holy Week this week. It begins with Palm Sunday and concludes on Easter Sunday.
It has always been fascinating for me to hear about individual and family traditions that occur yearly. Lent, Tenebrae, Good Friday, Maundy Thursday, fasting and other traditions and terms common to others, were mostly unknown to me growing up. With the exception of our yearly Easter Cantata, which generally occurred the Sunday before Easter, our family’s focus was on the celebration of Easter Sunday. To me, as a child, this meant a new dress, hat and white gloves! It also meant chocolate marshmallow bunnies, malted Easter eggs, Easter baskets, Sunrise services, inspirational and celebratory worship services, lunch at my Grandparent’s house and a big Easter Egg Hunt with my cousins. Other than dressing up, it was a simple and joyful time of celebration.
Shortly after getting married, I remember hearing the terms Lent and Maundy Thursday. My husband explained these terms to me because they were part of his family traditions. Since that time, I’ve come to appreciate many different traditions. One thing still puzzles me though, why is the day Jesus was crucified called “Good Friday?”
What traditions, celebrations and remembrances are special to you this season? By the way, I was quite proud of that little pocket book and my hat! My older sister thought she was pretty special too!
I proudly wore my trendy t-shirt, enjoying the swirl of the soft fabric. It was the Princess bodice, a little tight at the top then flowing down in a dress type way to just below my hip. I went all day, enjoying the T-shirt and feeling like a princess until waiting for the bus in front of my house.
My neighbor came out and waved, looked at me, then waved again. Now we are not the closest of neighbors, the waves hello the small talk at the mailbox. She looked at me strange again and started to walk towards me.
“Let me come up to you first.” She walked across the lawn to my drive way and realization hit me smack in the face as I noticed she was looking at my belly.
“Uh, no I’m not pregnant.” I said, immediately hating the trendy t-shirt.
“Oh OK, I wasn’t sure and since you were pregnant over the winter with your last child, I didn’t really know until I saw you with another baby!”
We laughed about it, talked about the first days of school, the last days of summer. The bus came, my boys got off and we went in to start homework and all the fun that comes home from school. Before I started the homework though, I went upstairs and took off that ultra comfy shirt and switched it for something less comfortable but not PREGNANT looking! That shirt now sits in a drawer as I determine its fate!
Do you have one of those fashion trends that turns into trump for you? What are your thoughts about these flowing T-shirts?
Make-up is one of those “extras” that can put a little bounce in most women’s step. It doesn’t take much – just a little powder, lip-gloss, a swipe of eye shadow, and a little mascara, and most women feel ready to “face” the world. I am not one of those women who cannot go out of the house without make-up – I can and I do. However, when I pause to put a little make-up on, like most women, I experience a little confidence boost.
During my middle school years, I recall selling make-up kits. I convinced one long-time bachelor to buy lipstick because he never knew when a lady friend might need some (my Mom made me give him his money back!). While in college, I was even an AVON lady! Not only did it help me earn a little extra money, I loved receiving the make-up in the mail and learning about new color trends.
Now, thirty-nine years after wearing make-up for the first time, I still love it! We all have our favorites and I want to hear about yours! Oprah might have her favorites, but let’s get real – most of us do not have Oprah’s budget!
One favorite of mine is “The New Mary Kay.” If you think of Mary Kay as something older women wear, think again. Their mineral foundations and eye shadows are stylish and chic, not to mention affordable.
Another current favorite of mine is the new vibrating mascara at the Lancôme counter. That mascara took my sparse, thin, short eyelashes and made them into full, lush, waterproof lashes perfect for a special occasion.
Unashamedly, I confess . . . make up is one of my little loves. So girls, let’s hear it. What is your favorite make-up find this year? What are your questions? Girls will always be girls, not matter what their age.
