When she worked as an administrative assistant at Integon (now GMAC), Kimberly Davis often gazed out the windows of the tall building down to the shops and restaurants of Fourth Street and daydream that one day, she would have her own shop there.
With encouragement from her boss, Kimberly went to Salem College to receive a degree in business and communications. Now 17 years later, and with 15 years of retail experience under her belt, Kimberly has truly realized that dream with Unique Home Expressions, her own home and garden shop which opened in July 2012 at 500 West Fourth Street, right in the shadow of the GMAC building where she once worked and dreamed up the shop. “I’m one of those people that believe if you try hard enough and things fall into place, you can realize your dreams,” said Kimberly.
Unique Home Expressions feels like a little oasis downtown, with the smell of local soaps and scented candles, the trickle of the fountain, the feel of handmade pottery and a feast of the bountiful colors of the season. Carrying a blend of local artisan products and interesting vendor items, Kimberly strives to keep the shop true to its name. “When ordering from a vendor, I won’t buy if they require a bulk order, no matter how much I like it. I prefer to carry only a few of each item, to increase its uniqueness for shoppers,” explained Kimberly.
