Autumn has arrived in the Carolinas, and it’s once again time to pack the kids in the car for a family drive to view the colorful trees and snap a few pictures for the family photo album. This year, instead of listening to the kids complain about the long drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway (“Are we there yet?”) or emptying your wallet in Asheville, why not enjoy all the bountiful colors, flavors and sounds of the season by going to Old Salem Museums & Gardens right here at home.
For the first time, Old Salem is celebrating the entire season with a full calendar of activities that run from September 13 to November 13. See how the Moravians prepared apples and pork at Harvest Day. Learn a new skill at a gardening or craft workshop. Celebrate Halloween with a ghost tour and trick-or-treating. Hear a magnificent performance on the restored Tannenberg organ. And much, much more!
If you cannot make one of these special events or classes, there are plenty of daily opportunities at Old Salem to make autumn special. Snap some photographs when the maple tree next to the Miksch House is in peak color. Drop by the gardens and see what the horticulture department is cultivating. Purchase a few heirloom flower bulbs at the garden shop at T. Bagge Merchant to enjoy next spring. Or simply take home a delicious apple spice poundcake from Winkler Bakery to fill out your Thanksgiving feast.
